The Smarter Your Kid Gets, the Worse They Explain It
Smart kids often give explanations nobody can follow, and it's not a communication flaw. It's the curse of knowledge, and it quietly sinks science fairs, class presentations, and interviews. Here's the fix.

When your kid explains something they know well and the listener's face goes blank, the problem usually isn't that your kid is bad at explaining. It's that they know the thing too well to explain it. Once you understand something deeply, you lose the ability to imagine not understanding it, so you skip the exact steps a listener needs. Psychologists call it the curse of knowledge, and it hits smart kids hardest.
Here's the scene. Your kid finishes describing their science project, or their favorite game, or the thing they researched for a week, and the adult across from them nods politely and clearly has no idea what just happened. Your kid thinks they explained it. They did, to someone who already knew it. Which was nobody in the room.
This matters more than a confusing dinner story. The kid who can't explain what they know loses points at the science fair, loses the room in a presentation, and loses an interviewer who asked a simple question and got a wall of jargon. Knowing the material is only half the job. Getting it into someone else's head is the other half, and it's the half nobody teaches.
Why does my kid explain things in a way nobody understands?
Because your kid's brain has quietly deleted the memory of not knowing.
Think about what happens when you learn something. At first every piece is new and you can feel the gaps. Then you learn it, and the gaps fill in, and the whole thing collapses into something obvious. And here's the trap: once it's obvious to you, you can't remember when it wasn't. So when you explain it, you start from where you are now, which is way past where your listener is standing.
There's a famous study on this. In 1990, a Stanford researcher named Elizabeth Newton had people tap out the rhythm of a well, known song with their fingers while a listener tried to guess the song. The tappers predicted the listeners would get it about half the time. The listeners guessed right about two and a half percent of the time. Three songs out of 120.
Why the huge gap? Because the tapper hears the whole song in their head, the melody, the words, the whole thing, while they tap. The listener hears random knocks on a table. The tapper literally cannot imagine that the listener isn't hearing the song too. That's the curse of knowledge in one experiment. Your kid is the tapper. They're hearing the whole song. The audience is hearing knocks.
A student I work with in Marietta had a genuinely great physics project. When she explained it to me, she opened with her hypothesis about angular momentum and just kept going. Sharp, fast, confident. And I was lost inside of thirty seconds, not because it was too advanced, but because she never told me what she was measuring or why. She'd skipped the setup entirely, because to her the setup was so obvious it didn't feel worth saying. That's exactly the kid who gets dinged in the judge interview while a kid with a weaker project explains it cleanly and scores higher.
What does the curse of knowledge sound like when a kid talks?
It shows up in a few predictable ways, and once you hear them you can't unhear them.
Jargon with no translation. Your kid uses the real term for something, the one they learned, without checking whether the listener knows it. "So I ran a titration and the endpoint was off." Cool. What's a titration. They don't define it because to them it doesn't need defining.
Starting in the middle. They open with the interesting part, the result or the twist, and skip the part that makes it make sense. It's like walking into a movie an hour in. The exciting scene means nothing without the first hour.
No "why this matters." They tell you what happened but never why anyone should care, because to them the stakes are self, evident. They've lived with this thing for weeks. The listener met it four seconds ago.
Speed. A kid explaining something familiar tends to accelerate, because their brain is running ahead and the mouth chases it. The listener needs the opposite, room to catch up.
The tell is always the same. You ask a clarifying question and your kid looks a little annoyed, like the answer was obvious. That flash of "why are you asking that" is the curse of knowledge showing its face. What's obvious to them isn't on the table for anyone else.
How do you teach a kid to explain so anyone can follow?
Start from the listener, not from the material. That's the whole shift. Bad explanations start where the speaker is. Good ones start where the listener is and build a bridge.
Name the thing before you use it. Teach your kid one rule: the first time you say a term the listener might not know, define it in plain words right there. "I ran a titration, which just means slowly adding one liquid to another until a reaction happens." One clause. That clause is the difference between a listener who's with them and one who quietly checked out.
Give the setup before the payoff. Have your kid answer two questions before they ever get to the interesting part. What was I trying to find out, and why did it matter? Ten seconds of setup makes the next two minutes land. Skip it and the best material in the world hits a listener who has no place to put it.
Use one comparison. The fastest way to move an idea into someone else's head is to tie it to something they already know. "It's basically like when you shake a soda and open it too fast." Analogies feel almost too simple to smart kids, which is exactly why they skip them and lose people. A good comparison does more work than three technical sentences.
One idea at a time, with room to breathe. Complex things have to be delivered in order, one step, pause, next step. A kid who dumps the whole thing in one breath is tapping the song faster. Slowing down and checking the listener's face is how you find out if the bridge is holding.

How do you practice explaining clearly at home?
You practice on a real listener who genuinely doesn't know the thing. That's the only honest test.
Use the youngest person in the house. Have your kid explain their project or their topic to a younger sibling, or to a grandparent who knows nothing about it. A ten, year, old is a brutal, perfect audience. They'll say "I don't get it" without any social filter, and every "I don't get it" is your kid finding a step they skipped. If they can make a fifth grader understand it, they can make a judge understand it.
Run the jargon hunt. Have your kid explain the thing to you and your only job is to raise a hand every time they use a word the average adult wouldn't know cold. They keep going, but now they have to define that word on the spot. Do it a few times and they start defining terms automatically, because they've felt the interruption.
Ask the dumb question on purpose. When they explain something, ask the most basic question you can, the one that seems too obvious to ask. "Wait, what actually is the thing you measured?" Watch whether they can answer it simply or whether they get flustered. If they can't explain the base of it in plain words, they don't understand it as well as they think, and the room will catch that too.
Make them do the one, sentence version. After the full explanation, have your kid sum the whole thing up in a single plain sentence a stranger would get. "Basically, I tested whether cold batteries die faster, and they do." If they can nail the one, sentence version, they own the idea. If they can't, they've been hiding behind complexity, and boiling it down forces real understanding.
Don't let them explain it only to you, the parent who already halfway knows what they're doing. That's the tapper explaining to another tapper. Get a real cold listener in the room, every time.
