Since 1938 The American Legion has run a national high school oratorical contest on the U.S. Constitution, and in 2026 it awarded more than $203,500 in college scholarships. It is open to any student in grades 9–12 — public, private, parochial, military or homeschool — with no entry fee. Students give an 8–10 minute prepared oration of their own writing on an aspect of the Constitution, then a 3–5 minute speech on one of four assigned topics, both from memory: no notes, no lectern, no props, no slides. Contests run from the local Post to District to State, with cash awards at every level, and the 50 state champions meet at Hillsdale College in Michigan for scholarships of $20,000–$25,000. The Acworth Post awards $400, $300 and $200 for first, second and third. This is the single best proving ground we know of for the skills we teach, and exactly the kind of room our Break Through and Leading Edge students are built for.
