The ladder · Level 4 · Cold talks, interviews and leading the room
Command
The bar: Speak cold for five minutes on a prompt you see the moment you start, handle an interview on a video call, on the phone and across a table, and lead a group rep by coaching someone else.
15 lessons. Finished at Commanding on most skills, nothing below Holding, across the last three reps. A rep or two a week puts it at about a quarter.
Cold
Tell me about yourself
The interview answer that is really a two-minute talk with no slides and no warm-up. Your ten-second version, then the minute behind it.
The rep: Cold introduction, 2 minutes (2 min, cold)
Impromptu
A prompt you have never seen, a room waiting, no notes. Point, Picture, Point is the thing you reach for.
The rep: Impromptu, 2 minutes (2 min, cold)
The hardest question
The hardest interview questions are about failure and weakness. Answer them straight, with a real story and what changed.
The rep: A time you failed, 2 minutes (2 min, cold)
The five-minute talk
One thread
Five minutes on one thread, deep: where it started, the moment it turned, where it goes next.
The rep: One thread, 3 minutes (3 min)
Five minutes, prepared
The full talk, prepared, from memory. Everything on the ladder in one rep: structure, a pace that bends, pauses that land, a close.
The rep: Five minutes, prepared (5 min)
Real rooms
Virtual presence
Camera at eye level and centered with a little headroom, light from a window on your face, background blur on, sitting up. Set it in the staging screen before you join, every time, without being asked. Look at the lens, not the screen.
The rep: On camera, 60 seconds (1 min)
The phone
Introduce yourself the second you pick up: "Hey, this is ___." A greeting that says who they reached, leave a message, I will call you back. A voicemail that says who you are, why you called, call me back, sign off. A clean ending so nobody is left on a dead line.
The rep: A voicemail and a greeting, 60 seconds (1 min)
The online interview
On a video call the camera is the room: eyes on the lens, energy up a notch, and every answer landed on a period because nobody can read your hands.
The rep: The online interview, 3 minutes (3 min, cold, with a follow-up)
The in-person interview
Across a table: the handshake, the posture, eyes on the person, and a pause before the answer instead of a filler.
The rep: The in-person interview, 3 minutes (3 min, cold, with a follow-up)
The phone interview
On the phone the voice carries everything. Pace, pause and pitch do the work your face and hands cannot. Stand up and smile; it changes the voice.
The rep: The phone interview, 3 minutes (3 min, cold, with a follow-up)
Marry the story to the question
A mountain-biking story becomes the answer to "tell me about a time you worked on a team." The story bank pays off when a lived moment becomes the answer someone is actually asking for.
The rep: One story, two questions, 2 minutes (2 min)
Leading
Coach a classmate
Give feedback the way Noah does: "I noticed ___. The impact was ___. One thing to try is ___." The middle piece is what gives it authority.
The rep: Feedback in three steps, 2 minutes (2 min)
Intentional before the room
Walk into an event knowing what you want out of it, the way you already do before a race. Name it ahead of time, and you hand yourself a story of growth to tell later.
The rep: Before the room, 60 seconds (1 min)
The panel
Follow-ups from a panel come fast and from every angle. Answer the question asked, point first, and hold the pace.
The rep: A decision, then the panel (3 min, with a follow-up)
Five minutes, cold (capstone)
The level in one rep: five minutes on a prompt you see when you press start, then the hardest follow-up.
The rep: Five minutes, cold (5 min, cold, with a follow-up)
